Former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was in Bradford at the weekend to pay his last respects to one of his keenest fans.
Qasim Rehman, 22, of Cullingworth, had been due to drive the boxer around Manchester two years ago.
But Qasim’s body was found in a field off Stocks Lane, Clayton Heights, two years ago.
On Saturday Iron Mike, casually dressed in jeans and wearing a prayer cap, joined Qasim’s family at his grave in Scholemoor Cemetery in Bradford.
It was Qasim’s father Fazal Rehman who paid for the Bradford leg of Mike Tyson’s week-long tour of the UK.
Last October an inquest into Qasim’s death heard he had died from cocaine poisoning and that he had been in the habit of taking the drug recreationally.
The inquest was also told how the drug had turned him paranoid and on two occasions including the day of his death had jumped more than 20ft out of the window of his flat in Westwood Hall, Peregrine Way, Bradford.
The boxer, who once proclaimed himself the Baddest Man on the Planet, arrived in the city in a blacked-out Rolls Royce and a six-car entourage, flanked by burly bodyguards.
Onlookers were instructed by his team to be quiet, not to talk to him and not to take any photographs after the cemetery visit because he was “upset”.
He later attended an event at the Abundant Life Centre in Wapping Road for a question-and-answer session, an auction, a three-course meal and talks by five other speakers. World champion boxer Johnny Nelson, Bradford boxer Junior Witter and Alec Alan, who opened Bradford’s first amateur boxing club, were also due to be there.
Proceeds will go to charities including Bradford’s Marie Curie hospice and the Beating Hearts in Bradford Appeal.
