More than a dozen councillors voted against Sir Ken Morrison becoming a Freeman of the City because they believe he does not deserve the honour and because of the expense.

Liberal Democrat and Green members took the decision at a meeting of Bradford Council last week, as reported in the Telegraph & Argus.

But because at least two-thirds of councillors voted yes, the former boss of the Morrisons supermarket chain will be admitted to the roll of Honorary Freeman at a later ceremony.

Green group leader Councillor Martin Love said: “When you look at the list of people who have received this honour, they have been very, very special people. We felt that Sir Ken had made an awful lot of money out of doing what he does, but that it wasn’t appropriate for him to be made a Freeman at this time.

“In addition, we did not think it was appropriate to spend money on a civic ceremony. As well, 4 Para was only admitted a few months ago.”

Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Jeanette Sunderland said: “If you look at the criteria for admission to become an honorary Freeman, it is very clear that it is for outstanding contributions on a national and international stage.

“While we are not trying to detract from anything Ken Morrison has done, there are others in the district who have made similar contributions.

“The honour of having the freedom of the city must be reserved for those of the highest possible achievement.”
