Councillors have defended the staging of an open-air concert at Ilkley Lido after complaints about noise from residents.

People from around the town contacted Ilkley parish councillors, police, and Bradford Council’s environmental health department as the music from bands playing at Live at the Lido on Saturday, July 3, could be heard on the other side of town until 11pm.

Performers included several local singers and bands including up and coming Ilkley rock band Riptide, whose lyrics attracted criticism for their strong language at Ilkley Carnival.

Frazer Irwin, of Queens Road, went to a meeting of the parish council to protest about the noise.

He said he had received calls from other Ilkley people about the ‘infernal racket’, and phoned a Bradford Council environmental health officer when the music went on past 10pm.

Parish councillors said they had heard complaints from residents, and some felt the noise had been ‘excessive’.

But several of them spoke out in support of the concert, which attracted hundreds of teenagers and raised money towards the Friends of Ilkley Lido’s refurbishment work at the outdoor pool.

Councillor Pauline Dixon told the meeting: “I find it very disappointing that there’s been all these complaints, as I just think it’s wonderful to have something like that.”
