Ilkley councillors are supporting a bid for a new order which could result in dog walkers being fined up to £1,000 for allowing their pets to foul on Ilkley Moor.
Ilkley Parish Council is to write to Bradford Council in support of proposals for a Dog Control Order on public land across the district, including the moor.
Although owners already risk fines if they do not clean up on parks, footpaths, play areas and grass verges, the current legislation does not cover Ilkley Moor.
Public consultation on the order comes to an end on Friday, July 23.
Councillor Kathy Best said irresponsible dog owners should be told that leaving dog mess in public places is unacceptable.
The council agreed to write a letter to Bradford in support of the proposed Dog Control Order.
The order, if it goes ahead, would be introduced under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, and would cover public land across the whole of the Bradford district, including Ilkley Moor.
