Business bosses from across the district have been urged to give their backing to Bradford City Football Club to help the team win promotion in the coming season.
Addressing the Bradford Property Forum yesterday, Roger Owen, City’s commercial director, made a direct appeal for forum members to consider sponsoring the Bantams.
During the event, which was held at Valley Parade, he gave a frank assessment of City’s somewhat restricted financial situation.
And he urged business leaders to support the upcoming launch of Bradford City FC Financial Services, a pioneering project aimed at raising funds for the club.
Mr Owen, formerly with Morrisons for 34 years, said: “I joined the board here (Bradford City) a year ago this week with a view to cutting costs and trying to increase income.
“We are one of only two clubs out of 92 across the country that are free of debt, which is good news.
“The problem is that we have got no cash so, whenever we want to do anything, we have to bear that in mind.
“For example, we need to spend £1,700 to re-white line the car park outside and are looking for sponsorship.
“The last three years have been a disappointment, but we believe we are on the verge of getting out of this division and making some progress.
“We are on the way to selling 10,000 season tickets and are already the bookies’ favourites for the championship. We think we’ve got some exciting times ahead.”
In a direct appeal to those in the room, many of whom were representing top Bradford companies, Mr Owen said: “I would urge you all to look at the Bradford City website and see the opportunities that might be available to you and your companies for sponsorship this season. We really want to get Bradford businesses involved and want your support to get out of this division.”
In the coming years, Mr Owen said the club would try to gain the Carbon Trust Standard for measuring, managing and reducing its carbon emissions, as part of the club’s commitment to cut its footprint and reduce energy costs.
