New and long-term residents of the village of Low Mill on the outskirts of Addingham are being invited to celebrate community spirit at a street party later this month.
Residents want to bring together occupants of recently-built homes and people living in the older cottages in the celebration on Saturday, July 31.
There are plans to set out tables and bunting in the middle of the street on Mill Fold and serve a meal to as many as 100 members of the community.
Further plans for the day, from 2pm to 11pm, include children’s games, a cake-baking competition, a bouncy castle and entertainment from a band.
The village consists of a number of newly developed houses, which were built over a period of around three years, meaning people have moved in gradually over the course of that time. There are also older cottages nearby where some people have lived for 20 to 30 years.
One of the party organisers, Natasha Fishwick, said: “We thought it would be nice to organise a community event which brought all of the new residents together and to invite the existing residents of Low Mill village so that everyone is involved.”
“So far we have gathered £500 for tickets, which will in turn pay for bunting, games, a band, food and bouncy castle. All of the residents have agreed to close the road at the cul de sac end of the new development to ensure that safety if paramount.”
She said the organisers had so far as ‘overwhelming support’ from residents both new and old, with offers of help ranging from finding meal ingredients to loaning catering equipment.
If the street party if a success, organisers hope to hold more community events in future, such as Christmas events and bonfire parties.
The street party will take place from 2pm until around 11pm.
