An investigation was under way last night into the cause of a fire which claimed the life of a 33-year-old man and left a woman in hospital.

Emergency services were scrambled to a house in Argyle Street, Keighley, shortly after 5pm following reports of a fire.

Police have said a man died following the blaze and a woman was left in hospital in a stable condition.

An investigation was launched last night to establish the cause of the fire. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers received a call shortly after 5pm this evening reporting a house fire at an address on Argyle Street, Keighley.

“The fire has since proved fatal to an adult male. A woman has been taken to Airedale General Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

“An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the fire. However it is still in the early stages.”

Police cordoned off the road in Keighley last night while a detailed investigation of the scene was carried out.

Crowds gathered as police officers stood guard at either end of the cordoned-off street, which had a white tent placed in the middle of the road.

Councillor Zafar Ali (Con, Keighley Central) said he had travelled to the scene from City Hall, in Bradford, after being informed of the fire.

He said: “It is a very tragic incident and my heart goes out to both families, the woman’s and the man’s.

“It is a very tragic story for the people who are left.

“The only thing I can say is God rest his soul and hopefully the woman will survive.”
