A Bradford nightclub owner is preparing to give the gift of life to a stranger by donating one of his kidneys.

Mark Moorhouse, 39, of Mandale Road, Wibsey, has undergone extensive medical, surgical and psychological assessment to establish he is fit and healthy enough to be a living donor.

After passing those tests, Mr Moorhouse, who owns Candy, in Sackville Street, with his partner, is months away from undergoing keyhole surgery to remove his left kidney – to be transplanted into an unknown recipient.

Before the operation he will host a fundraising night at his club on Saturday, July 31, featuring the Cheeky Girls, to raise money for the renal transplant co-ordinators’ trust fund, to thank them for their support.

The father-of-two is speaking out about his decision to encourage more people to sign up to the organ donor register and urge others to consider becoming a living donor.

“I am giving the gift of life and there is nothing better to give then that,” he said. “There are tons of people out there waiting for a transplant and I want to highlight that there is something people can do now – they don’t have to wait until they die.

“One in three kidney transplants is from a living donor and you don’t have to be related to someone.”

Ninety-eight people are waiting for a kidney in the Bradford area, but, as the Telegraph & Argus revealed on Friday, only seven donations of major organs were made at Bradford Teaching Hospitals between 2005 and 2010.
