Brilliant sunshine and clear blue skies ensured record turn-outs at galas across the district over the weekend.

About 2,000 people were at the Baildon Carnival opened by MP Philip Davies and carnival queen Amy Barry.

Bands organised by promoters from Bankside Studios played on the main stage. They included Redemption who have just returned from recording in Los Angeles. And Hall Royd Methodist Church brass played at the playing fields in Jenny Lane.

Dave Mitchell, who organised the event, said: “The weather’s been great and the support has been brilliant.”

Fund raisers at Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope, near Keighley, held their annual garden party yesterday.

The event was football-themed to coincide with last night’s World Cup final and raised thousands of pounds for Sue Ryder Care. The money will go towards the £2.2million annual running costs of the hospice.

At Cullingworth Gala, queen Alisha Horsfield, ten, was crowned by last year’s queen before leading a procession with the Imperial Crusaders Marching Band from Station Road.

Energetic runners joined an afternoon fell race while children’s races were held in the village.

There was also lively entertainment at Cottingley Recreation Ground for the annual Cottingley Community Association Fun Day. Cottingley village school choir performed alongside members of the May School of Dance and Performing Arts, from Cross Hills.

Organiser John Goode said: “There was probably about 500-plus people and everybody’s been having a great time.”

However, he said this could be the last time the event is held because of a shortage of volunteers. Anyone who can help should call Mr Goode on (01274) 562496.
