A community drug and alcohol rehabilitation project saved from closure earlier this year will shut its doors for good on Friday.

Bosses at Caleb Alcohol and Drug Services in Bolling Road, Bradford, have been unable to find an additional £8,000 a month in running costs to supplement grant funding it received.

Chairman of directors Howard Astin said it had proved “well-nigh impossible” to operate a long-term abstinence programme without financial support from Bradford Council and NHS Bradford and Airedale.

He said: “Their policy has been not to finance such recovery programmes. Most of their financial support still centres on harm minimisation and reduction programmes.”

Mr Astin said about a quarter of those who signed up for the Caleb rehabilitation programme had become drug and/or alcohol free.

He said: “It has been tremendous and we are proud that a very professional yet caring service has been given to Bradford over these last 13 years."

As well as a rehabilitation programme, Caleb ran a cafe, a drop-in for addicts and families and an IT suite.

Liz Barry, joint commissioning manager for substance misuse at NHS Bradford and Airedale, said: “We had given Caleb financial support to continue its work but were unable to offer long-term funding.”
