A pioneering learning-by-doing area at a primary school in Bradford could be up and running by September if a bid passes the final stage.
Plans for a kinaesthetic learning park on part of a sports field at Lower Fields Primary School, East Bowling, have now been supported by two Bradford Council committees.
And the only thing that could now stand in its way is the Government Office for the region, which has the final say.
The enclosed outdoor learning area will be a one-of-its-kind, open-air space bordered by steep grass mounds and fencing. It will be used by children to learn through physical activity by being laid out for different sports, as well as drama. It would also be open to other nearby schools, benefiting around 2,000 children.
Sporting body Sport England had objected to the scheme on the grounds that it would lead to the loss of part of a playing field. It has not recognised this new type of learning area – which would be the first in the country – as an exception to its rules.
Last month, Bradford planning panel agreed to overrule the objection and referred the application to the regulatory and appeals committee.
Yesterday the committee backed the plans unanimously and referred the matter to the Secretary of State, calling for it to be passed.
Councillors described the situation with Sport England as “tick box over reality” and said it actually increased the number of sports pitches available.
The school’s sustainability manager Tricia Harwood, said: “This positive decision takes us so much closer to reaching a final outcome.
“We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support and goodwill from all those involved, and would like to thank everyone for their backing and input.”
Head teacher John Edwards said: “The adventure park will enhance the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of so many learners. Kinaesthetic learning is so important – it’s also fun – and learning should be fun.”
Speaking after the meeting, ward Councillor Zameer Shah (Con, Bowling and Barkerend) added: “It’s a unique facility and I will be encouraging all my fellow councillors to support this. I am delighted with the decision.”
