Ilkley could have a mayor under proposals to change the parish council’s status.

A report by the council chairman Brian Mann, suggests the authority should be renamed as a town council instead, like the surrounding towns of Otley, Keighley and Skipton.

And if Councillor Mann’s proposals are backed at a full council meeting next week, it could pave the way for Ilkley to have a mayor.

Coun Mann’s report follows moves by the parish council to take on more responsibility and gain more independence from Bradford Council.

Members voted to take on the power of well-being, which grants local authorities more freedom to spend cash. Coun Mann said town councils like Otley, Keighley and Skipton surround Ilkley and a change would have an implication on status.

“Ilkley is a town,” he said. “We have a town hall, we have a town crier, and I think it’s probably time to talk about the status of Ilkley.

“It makes no difference to the way we operate but what it does mean is that we could have a mayor. Equally we could have a chairman of a town council.”

Other items to be discussed at the full council include an application for a second pledge of £20,000 towards Ilkley Rugby Club’s redevelopment of its clubhouse and a project manager for the paddling pool.

The meeting starts at the town hall at 7.30pm on Monday.
