Calls have been made by councillors for speed cameras on a “dangerous” stretch of road in Brighouse after an elderly man died in a car accident as he walked his dogs.

There are no fixed cameras in the entire lower Calder Valley, and Calderdale Council said Government cutbacks meant it was unlikely that situation will change.

The crash on Sunday occurred in Bradford Road, near the junction with Russell Way.

The 75-year-old man was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he later died.

Coun Colin Stout said: “All we have asked for is adequate safety measures so pedestrians and motorists are aware of the dangers.”

Calderdale Council’s network manager Nigel Pickles said: “Following the Government’s recent decision to withdraw road safety grant funding it is unlikely we will be able to install fixed cameras in the near future.”

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail.
