Two cousins have each been jailed for 18 months for selling tens of thousands of pounds of counterfeit branded goods at their Bradford shop.
Ebrahim Bismillah and Zakaria Bismillah ran their sideline from an upstairs room at their store in Boynton Street, a Court heard yesterday.
Each pleaded guilty to 22 charges under the Trademark Act at Bradford Magistrates’ Court last month.
The Justices sent the pair to Bradford Crown Court for sentence.
West Yorkshire Trading Standards officers uncovered the offences during a seven-hour search of the shop, now shut, in February last year.
More than 1,000 items were seized, including bottles of Hugo Boss Woman eau de toilette and perfume, Lacoste gloves, boxes of Regal Kingsize cigarettes, Paul and Shark jumpers, Nike shoes and G-Star jeans.
Ebrahim Bismillah, 38, of St Margaret’s Road, Lidget Green, Bradford, told investigating officers he was given money and a free run to buy the goods in Manchester.
Zakarai Bismillah, 33, of Arncliffe Terrace, Lidget Green, said he owned the Boynton Street shop.
Details in books kept by the cousins showed a figure of £53,114 from January 2007 to December 2007 and £79,097 from January 2008 to December that same year.
The court heard the defendants were family men of previous good character and the shop had now closed down.
After the case, a spokesman for West Yorkshire Trading Standards told the Telegraph & Argus: “This is a very good result for West Yorkshire Trading Standards and I am pleased that the courts have recognised the seriousness of these types of offences and the collective harm that the counterfeiting industry can do to our economy.
“By targeting those who disregard the law, hopefully, our efforts make life easier for legitimate businesses in the current economic climate.”
