A residential development on the site of an historic mill is proving a huge hit.

Twenty-three apartments and one house have already been sold since the launch in late February of the Woodlands Mill development at Steeton.

Guy Ackernley, for Leeds-based sales agent King Sturge, said: "We have all been astonished -- and delighted -- by the incredible popularity of Woodlands Mill. In my view this demonstrates the growing popularity of rural hinterland of Keighley. It has become the new Ilkley.

"It is virtually impossible for first time buyers to buy in Ilkley itself, so they gravitate towards places like Steeton. It is significant that 90 per cent of the transactions on this development have come from people already living within a 10-mile radius of Steeton.

"This is a very special development indeed. It is an inspirational mix of conversion, creation and renovation, breathing new life into a part of Steeton that has been sadly neglected in recent years. A heritage building has been reinvigorated, providing a wonderful modern living opportunity in the most attractive of woodland surroundings."

The development comprises three one-bedroom and 45 two-bedroom apartments, together with town houses.

The old Grade 2 listed mill is at the heart of the scheme. Originally a worsted spinning mill, it was built in the early 19th century for Thomas Pearson and Sons. It was bought by John Clough, of Keighley, in 1847 and his family continued to trade on the site until the beginning of the Second World War.

The development also provides a further 10 apartments in the conversion of a smaller mill.

Debbie Hogg - sales and marketing manager for the developer, Hanebury Estates - said: "This development has given us special pleasure, because it is so unusual."
