A man accused of a crime of passion with his lover was now infatuated with another woman, a Court heard.
Graham Haylett is alleged to have plotted with Tracey Cameron to lure her former boyfriend to his death.
The pair, who deny murder, are said to have seen Leonard Fulbirg as an obstacle to their passionate relationship.
Mr Fulbirg had been in a relationship with Cameron and they had a child together but she began an affair with Haylett in the month leading to his disappearance.
The dismembered remains of Mr Fulbirg, 49, the father of at least 12 children, were found in March 1997.
His torso bones were scattered high on Oxenhope Moor above Keighley. His head and limbs were never found.
Mr Fulbirg was last seen alive on Sunday, August 11, 1996 when he left the home of his brother, Robert, in Coldbeck Drive, Buttershaw.
He had arranged to meet Cameron, a mother-of-three, at McDonalds in Rooley Lane, Bradford.
But Cameron, 40, of Dunsford Avenue, Bierley, says she never went to meet Mr Fulbirg that night.
The prosecution allege that she and Haylett, also 40, a cleaner of Wilson Wood Street, Batley, lured Mr Fulbirg to his death.
Yesterday Haylett's brother, Mark, 36, said he had met Tracey when the couple were living on the Bierley estate.
Mr Haylett, who was living in Clayton Road, Lidget Green, at the time, said Graham and Tracey did car boot sales together.
Then Graham told him the relationship was over and he helped his brother to move his belongings to a new address in Batley.
"He was hoping to get back with Tracey and move to Bridlington for a new start," Mr Haylett told Leeds Crown Court.
But the next he knew Graham was seeing another woman, Carrie Webster, who lived in Dewsbury. Graham told Mark he had met his new girlfriend through work.
Mr Haylett told the court his brother was in a terrible state after he was arrested on suspicion of murdering Mr Fulbirg. He had been held in custody since April last year.
Mr Haylett said part of the reason for Graham's distress was that he was infatuated with Miss Webster and very much in love with her.
Mr Haylett said Graham was devastated when last July the police ended all contact between him and Carrie.
He said anonymous gifts of a watch and clothes sent to his brother in prison on his birthday and at Christmas came from Carrie.
Haylett's mother, Brenda Hodgson, a retired cleaning supervisor, told the court her son said he had met a really nice girl when he started seeing Tracey.
She said Tracey was staying at a women's refuge at the time and she first met her on a street corner in Halifax.
She said the couple first lived in Hyne Avenue in Bradford and then moved to a new home in Dunsford Avenue, also on the Bierley estate.
Mrs Hodgson told the jury she never heard the couple mention the name Leonard Fulbirg.
The trial continues on Tuesday.
