A horrified Bradford businessman has offered a cash reward to help find a hit-and-run driver he said had left a young man dead in the street.

The owner of Thomas Crompton Developments Ltd will donate £1,000 cash to help police trace the driver who was in collision with 24-year-old Paul Lupton.

Mr Crompton said: "This is a very callous man who has left a young man for dead in the street. He cannot get away with this and we need to make sure that he doesn't."

The businessman said he was anxious to ease the family's plight after reading about the impact of the collision in the Telegraph & Argus yesterday.

Paul, of Leeds Road, Bradford, who is currently in Leeds General Infirmary, suffered from a blood clot on his brain, lung damage and neck injury after a collision with a Fiat Punto while he cycled in Bowling Back Lane.

He has not fully recovered consciousness for more than eight days.

Mr Crompton's firm, which is on the same road, learned of the incident after road closures affected work.

He said: "We were concerned that someone had been hurt, especially when we saw the mangled push bike. Now we need to catch the car driver and hopefully the money will get someone to talk."

Offering his support to the family, he said: "I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery."

Paul's mother Linda Murgatroyd, 42, of Hall Lane, East Bowling, was touched by the company's generosity.

She said: "I think it would be a great help. It might make the difference and make someone come forward."

Mr Crompton also encouraged other Bradford business to donate money in the appeal.

"Businesses should not only earn money from the area but put a bit back in too. If there's any wrong doing we need to rally together and help."

Police are continuing an appeal for witnesses to the accident, which happened as Paul got off his friend's bike at 6.50pm on January 19.

Crimestoppers are offering up to £1,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and charge. It could add to Mr Crompton's donation of £1,000.

Ian Froggett, West Yorkshire regional co-ordinator for Crimestoppers said information passed on through anonymous calls was invaluable.

Talking about Mr Crompton's reward, he said: "I hope it has a great impact. It shows there are a lot of good people that value the course of justice and want this offender to be brought to justice."

Bradford South Police have urged anyone with information to contact PC Andy Barron on (01274) 376459.
