Cougar Cubs 22 Normanton Knights 28 (after extra time) - The Cougars almost pulled off a giant killing act in this intriguing encounter.

After falling 14 points behind in as many minutes it looked like the Knights from the division above were going to cruise into the next round. But the Cubs hadn't read the script and refused to lie down.

Some brave tackling in defence and exciting attacking flair kept them in the game as they scored a converted try just before the break. The visitors were stunned on the restart as the Cougars hit them with a series of attacking moves that had them penned in their own half for long periods.

The gauntlet was thrown down as the Cubs scored another two tries to take the lead 18-16.

Defences remained on top until three minutes from time when the Cubs extended their lead with another converted try to seemingly seal the game with a six point lead. Safe play was the order of the day but a loose ball proved costly as the Knights gained possession and scored out wide.

A controversial conversion awarded by the referee levelled the scores (even the knights coach thought the kick was wide) and the game had to go to extra time.

More controversy followed in the second period of extra time the referee awarding a try that was clearly not grounded under full control and the great escape was complete. A frantic finish followed with the Home team pressuring to the end.

West Hull Under 14s 0

Cougar Cubs 28

Despite the long journey the Cubs weren't phased by a strong start from West Hull who moved the ball wide and made significant inroads into the Cubs defence several times in the opening minutes. Both teams had tries disallowed before Jack Copperwaite went in under the posts after a neat pass from Jake Waddington.

Defences were on top but some smart work near the half time whistle by Ashley Honeyman saw him make five metres from the play the ball to go over in the corner, and the Cubs went in with a 10-0 lead after a tight first half.

In the second half, West Hull would have hoped to make the best of the slope and it looked as through the Cubs would have their work cut out against a slight wind and playing into the low sun. But most of the game was played in the Hull half and an early try from dummy half by Grant Ackroyd stretched the lead further before Ashley Honeyman finished off the move of the game to sprint in along the touchline to go in at the corner.

Further tries from Jake Waddington and Matty Bailey were the icing on the cake in a thoroughly convincing performance by the Cubs which saw them into the third round of the National Cup.

Huddersfield Sharks 0

The Cubs made it two good wins in two weeks with an awesome show of rugby on a cold winters' morning.

After a long warm up period the match kicked off, and from the first kick and chase the Cubs were never really under threat. Certain players had moved positions for experience in different roles so it remained to be seen how the match would develop.

Aaron Tatersall-Jarvis started the match with a great charge down the pitch. The passes down the hill then set Lee Thompson up for the opening try, which was converted by Ben Stead.

From the restart the Cougars were on the attack and this culminated with Wasim Sabir going over the line for the first of a very well deserved hat trick. Chris Spencer added the two points.

Huddersfield had the ball only for a short while before some demon tackling from Josh Lynam gave the cubs back possession and the ball flowed to the top end of the pitch through many hands, culminating with Jordan Aitchison going over for the first of his brace of tries.

The Cubs were now alight and ready to go again, some demon tackles from Lynam and Martyn Broadly kept the Sharks very near their line.

On the fifth tackle the Sharks kicked only to be met by Jamie Pickles who ran half the pitch to score in the bottom corner. The Cubs were in attacking mood and only missed out on another try by a good tackle from the Sharks putting Broadley into touch on the right wing.

However, the Cubs were not for easing up and from the scrum got the ball back and it flew up to the top end of the pitch where it was received and put over the line by Joe Thorpe, then converted by Spencer.

The half time score was 26-0 and maybe the thought of slacking would enter the lads minds but no, they came out for the second half as eager. The crowd were in good spirits in this amicable and enjoyable game and watched as tackles and runs were the order of the day. Gwyn Drysdale, Jake Dunn, Chris Spencer, Jason Smith and the demon Lynam were tackling like good uns whilst others enjoyed runs with the ball, Joe Palmer only missing out on a try by being knocked into touch at the last minute by a Shark defender. However, the scorers were back again with Martyn Broadley running like the clappers up the field to score a great try, with Stead converting it was then even more like a tractor run for the cubs with Shabir scoring his other two tries powering up the hill but for raw power the two tries by Tatersall-Jarvis were bounding up the hill were good to see.
