A man who tried to protect a woman in a pub row ended up with a broken jaw, a Court heard.

And yesterday, Timothy Firth and Gareth Bairstow - who punched and kicked public-spirited Jonathan O'Reardon at the Oddfellows pub in Idle a year ago - were jailed.

Mr O'Reardon lost consciousness for a short time but was able to go home and it was not until next day that he went to hospital. Prosecutor Simon Haring told Bradford Crown Court Mr O'Reardon had to have an operation to insert permanent metal pins in his jaw.

Last month Firth, 24, of Old Park Road, Thorpe Edge, Bradford, and Bairstow, 22, of Redcar Road, Greengates, Bradford, both pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm.

Firth, who had several convictions for violence, was jailed for 21 months and Bairstow, who had one previous conviction for affray, for 15-months.

Mr Haring said Firth was involved in a row with a woman in the pub and Mr O'Reardon intervened when it appeared he was going to punch her.

"Mr O'Reardon stepped in, grabbing his left wrist," said Mr Haring. Firth is said to have shouted for help in getting Mr O'Reardon off and Bairstow pushed him in the chest. A witness then saw Bairstow punch Mr O'Reardon in the face. Both men kicked Mr O'Reardon as he lay on the floor.

Barrister Christopher Batty, for Firth, conceded he had drunk far too much, but stressed his client had not intended to hit the woman.

Philip Standfast, for Bairstow, said his client had virtually no recollection of that night and believed his drinks had been "spiked".

Judge Linda Sutcliffe said she would be failing in her duty if she passed anything other than prison sentences.

She said such incidents were disturbing to people out to enjoy themselves and Mr O'Reardon now had pins in his jaw for doing nothing except try to prevent an attack on a woman.
