THE construction of Addingham's new medical centre could have a major spin-off bonus for local youngsters, the Gazette can reveal.
Soil from the site of the building work at the rear of the Memorial Hall could be used to create an all-weather five-a-side pitch at Stockinger Lane, said parish council chairman Gordon Campbell.
Coun Campbell said that the new pitch could result from work being carried out to build the new medical centre because the site was on the side of a hill, creating a lot of leftover earth.
Coun Campbell said: "It is very expensive to dispose of. We have land we can level off an area at the top of the football field and use that area as a five-a-side all weather pitch which the cubs and scouts can use.
"But it is all very early days. The priority is the medical centre everything else is just a great big bonus."
Officials at the Airedale and Bradford North Primary Care Trust (PCT) had been due this week to announce which surgery had been granted the lease to operate the new medical centre, but a statement from the PCT issued yesterday said that the decision had been put off until March.
Coun Campbell said that councillors had drawn up plans to replace the existing scout hut on the site which will have to make way for the new medical centre.
The 30-year-old football pavilion at Stockinger Lane will either be extended to house the scouts, or demolished and replaced with a completely new building using funds gained from the sale of the parish council-owned medical centre site.
Coun Campbell said: "We will be formulating a plan to take to the planners within the next month.
"We have got two plans. One is an extension to the existing pavilion and one is to demolish it and rebuild.
"The pavilion was built about 30 years ago and it is in need of a lot of attention. What we have said is that we can do two jobs in one.
"It is green belt again that is the problem because we have go to justify what we are doing."
The medical centre plan is due to be debated by Bradford's regulatory and appeals committee on Wednesday.
Planning officers have recommended that it should be passed straight to Govern-ment officials for green belt approval.
Any plan to extend or replace the football pavilion will have to go through the same process before it can go ahead.
