For most people a trip of 60 miles will mean taking the car.

But big-hearted Joginder Singh is preparing to go the distance on foot.

The 53-year-old from West Bowling, Bradford, will fly out to India next month to stage the trek to raise much-needed funds for the victims of the South Asian earthquake.

His run has been organised by the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh temple, off Leeds Road in Bradford.

The temple's president, Ranbir Singh Rai, said funds raised will be donated to the Telegraph & Argus South Asia Earthquake disaster appeal.

The temple has already given £4,000 to the appeal in cash donations from the city's Sikh community.

Now they hope Mr Singh will be able to raise more cash for the cause through his run on February 22.

Last year he was hailed a hero on both sides of the world as he jetted to India to complete a 52-mile run - twice the length of a marathon.

He ran all the way from the Golden Temple in Amritsar to his home village of Khanowal to raise money to help the victims of the tsunami disaster on Boxing Day in 2004.

The idea for that route came from his friends at the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh temple, where he is now treasurer.

But next month he plans to jog even further - the 60 miles from the Golden Temple to Jullunder - in an adventure that will take him more than ten hours.

And he is toughening himself up again for the trip by running from the Guru Gobind temple to Leeds city centre and back - twice.

Mr Singh Rai said: "Everybody was horrified by the earthquake and there is still a need to keep raising money for the people who have lost their homes. Joginder ran for the victims of the tsunami disaster and now he has decided he wants to do this again.

"We had a meeting of the committee of the Sikh temples and each of the six temples will ask for more donations from the community for Joginder's run.

"Every Sikh likes Joginder because of what he is doing for the community.

"We are very proud of him and we know that he will be able to run 60 miles. He is running every day now - and runs through the night as well!"
