Bradford has a great city centre for those who don't mind walking, or are able to do so. It is spread out and hilly, with its Transport Interchange well away from many of the shops. A shopping expedition can usefully be combined with some healthy exercise in these fitness-conscious times.

However not everyone is up to that sort of challenge. It was to make life easier for those who are less fit and mobile that the experimental mini-tram was introduced towards the end of last year for a six-week trial, carrying passengers from the Interchange.

It turns out to have been a remarkable success, with more than 1,400 people using it to take them along Market Street towards Forster Square then returning via Kirkgate and Bank Street. A public consultation exercise brought a healthy 200 responses.

Given the public enthusiasm for the tram, the Council and its partners are right to be looking at ways in which it can be brought back, hopefully with funding organised through the Government. If it has proved popular already, it will be even more so when the Broadway shopping centre is up and running.

However, as Bradford North MP Terry Rooney says, its routes need to be more ambitious than those involved in the trial, which were largely on the flat. Plans for its future surely must include linking the lower end of town, including Broadway, with the upper level via Darley Street and John Street to enable all shoppers to take advantage of everything that the new Bradford will have to offer.
