A block of toilets at a Bradford pre-school will get a makeover, thanks to an award from Yorkshire Water and the Telegraph & Argus.

Sandy Lane pre-school, a registered charity, is celebrating after it was awarded a £500 Water Works Award.

The pre-school, based in Sandy Lane Methodist Church, only has two toilets for children and staff and will use a large sum of the £500 awarded to the pre-school to redecorate them.

Eve Haskins, secretary of Sandy Lane pre-school Committee, said: "The toilets are in dire need of repair. They need re-plastering and re-decorating.

"On behalf of all the children, staff and parents and committee of the school I would like to wholeheartedly thank the Telegraph & Argus and Yorkshire Water for the granting of the Yorkshire Water Water Works Award.

"Any outstanding money will then be spent on some desperately required educational equipment including multicultural and bilingual books to enhance the library and outdoor play equipment," said Mrs Haskins.

Karen O'Rourke, of Yorkshire Water, said: "We're delighted to be able to support the school in this way.

"The awards scheme has helped so many people and it is always the practical things that can make the biggest difference to organisations.

"Bringing the washroom facilities up to scratch will, I'm sure, be a popular project.

"The range of educational materials which the school will buy with the remainder of the award is another excellent use of the grant.

"We wish them every success with their work."

The school offers pre-school education to children aged between two-and-a-half years and five years.

"It runs two sessions a day and has a total of 45 pupils. "We try to make our pre-school genuinely accessible to children and families from all sections of the local community. A large council housing estate with a diverse cultural mix surrounds the pre-school," said Mrs Haskins. "The award will make a significant difference to the facilities within the pre-school and to the local community."

Peter Orme, managing editor of the Telegraph & Argus, said: "We are pleased to be able to continue making an impact on the local community by awarding money to charities such as the Sandy Lane pre-school."
