Successful role models in Bradford have been visiting Bradford schools to inspire pupils to achieve their goals.

More than 50 mentors have been going in to the schools as part of Education Bradford's Inspirers project to raise academic levels and encourage children to achieve their goals.

The project is run by Bradford Confederations and Bradford Achievement Forum. Bradford Confederations consists of five partnerships of secondary schools across the district working together to share ideas and resources.

The Bradford Achievement Forum was set up to tackle under achievement in schools by Education Bradford, the private company which runs the district's education services.

Javed Bashir, the co-ordinator of Bradford Achievement Forum said the scheme was progressing well.

"Since the mentors started getting involved with the children they have been coming back to us with some very positive things," he said.

The mentors have spent between two and three sessions working with students at Nab Wood School and Greenhead School in Keighley. And the scheme will be extended to Thornton Grammar, Tong, Belle Vue Girls and Belle Vue Boys schools early this year.

Since joining the Inspirers project musician Philip Charles has become a full-time personal advisor for Education Bradford. He has been working closely with pupils at Greenhead School, including 15-year-old Isaac Davis.

Mr Charles said: "I am in school quite free frequently but I try to limit the time I see Isaac to once every three or four weeks.

"We have things in common, we get on really well, and I am relishing the idea of giving him someone to listen to him.

"I am doing what I wanted to and that is contributing to a young person's success and setting them off in the right direction."

Isaac said: "Philip is helping in my school work and he makes sure I am on top of things and know what I am doing. I've only had three or four meetings and will have to wait and see how much it helps."

Ansar Aslam, chief executive of Aslam's Group, which includes Aslam's Interiors, 2A Interiors, Globus Manufacturing, Galleria Italia, Special Nights Bed Company, and Aslam's Contract Interior, is also taking part in the project.

He said: "I found that I have a lot in common with the pupil I am mentoring, and felt that I could make a difference. It is a good project and even if it only runs for six months I think it will be a good experiment in getting children to achieve their goals."
