Survivors of the devastating South Asia earthquake will receive meat from the qurbani sacrifice - thanks to donations to the Bradford-based Human Relief Foundation.

The charity will distribute the equivalent of 1,760kgs of beef and lamb to people living in the tent village set up in the district of Muzaffarabad,

Qurbani is a religious practice performed at Eid-ul-Adha involving the sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep, goat or cow which is distributed to the needy in a community.

The tent village at Muzaffarabad - called Thuri Park - is now home to 2,116 people whose homes have been destroyed by the earthquake or who have lost family members.

Yousaf Razaq, project co-ordinator for HRF which has its offices at Claremont in Great Horton, said 5kgs of meat was to be distributed to each tent, which he expected to last between two and four weeks.

During December the cost of food for the camp came to £8,800 and the charity has pledge to provide sustenance for the next five months.

The most pressing concern is not only the dropping temperatures, which now average -7C, but also how to provide homes for the villagers starting in June, said Mr Razaq, who urged people to continue to donate money to help keep the project going.

"We need more donations to continue HRF's project for the next five months and that there is a bigger project waiting for us, that of shelter homes for these 352 families beginning in June," he said.

Anyone who wants to donate should make cheques payable to the Human Relief Foundation and send them to: HRF, Freepost BD3125, PO Box 194, Bradford, BD7 1BR, UK or visit www.hrf.co.uk.
