A TEACHER who liked his work so much he stayed at the same school for 32 years has been awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours list.

Harry Pieniazek, is celebrating the anniversary of his arrival at Horsforth's New Laithes Junior School this week and looking forward to being presented with his award at Buckingham Palace later this year.

Mr Pieniazek said: "I have been a teacher for 36 years and I came here in 1974. I have seen a lot of children go though the school and have taught all age groups."

Mr Pieniazek is now responsible for assessment, recording and reporting at the school as well as co-ordinator for physical education and design technology.

Although he loves his job he says at aged nearly 60 it is hard work getting through all the work that needs doing.

He first learned of his award when he got a letter from the Prime Minister saying that he had been nominated by former head teachers and education service officials.

He said he was very excited and the most difficult part was keeping quiet about it because he was not able to tell colleagues that he had a chance of being rewarded for all his hard work.

But after looking on the internet when the news of other awards was announced and getting an official confirmation letter, Mr Pieniazek was able to let the cat out of the bag. He said: "I am over the moon about it and I am just looking forward to going to London to get the award."
