Bradford PA 1 Guiseley 3

WHEN young Guiseley substiutute Tom Marsden had to take the field mid-way through the first-half of this derby game he got an immediate chance to make an impact.

The 19 year-old former Sheffield Wednesday youth player came on to replace the injured Andy Lee as Neil Parsley's side battled to get back on track after losing the Boxing Day derby clash with Farsley Celtic.

With big striker Simon Parke cast aside and skipper Jez Illingworth and Keiron O'Brien injured Parsley opted to play David Cooke and Andy Lee up front and give the captain's armband to David Henry.

With Steve Ball barking out the orders from the left-back position Guiseley were never allowed to let their performance drop and the tough tackling of Ball, Danny Ellis, Nathan Hay and Sam Denton in defence and Neil Grayston and Matty Smithard in midfield kept Guiseley going forward.

They were all over the home side in the first-half but were looking unlikely to score until Marsden came on to replace Lee. He could have scored with his first touch but 'keeper Craig Parry got down well to save and then made it a double save as the rebound came back in.

On the stroke of half-time Marsden delighted the Guiseley following when he hammered home from the edge of the box.

Avenue showed more determination at the start of the second-half but this was the period when Smithard and Grayston made their challenges count.

Tom Greaves, surprisingly missing from Avenue's starting line up, was thrown on inthe second-half and was immediately brought down on the edge of the box. Smith's deflected free-kick was well saved by Matt Taylor.

Greaves then sent Liam Flynn away and his cross was met by Curtis Bernard to level the scores.

Smithard swivelled to get a shot in but his effort flashed wide before Guiseley regained the lead from a surprising source.

Left-back Ball was up on the right wing when Mark Stuart's deep cross found him and he headed home with aplomb much to his own delight as well as his teammates'. Marsden created himself some space and should probably have done better with his effort but in the 83rd minute nerves were settled when Guiseley scored - again from an unusual source.

Parry left his line to deal with a high ball only to see his clearance fall at the feet of Grayston some 25 yards out and he volleyed the ball back over the 'keeper for a glorious goal.

This was a real confidence booster for the Guiseley side who now take on Whitby Town on Saturday in the League Cup, kick-off at Nethermoor is 3 pm.

Ilkley return to action

After a three week mid-season break due to poor weather and the holiday period, Ilkley AFC return to West Yorkshire League action on Saturday with a home game against Baildon Trinity Athletic (kick-off 2.15pm). Players should meet at West Holmes field at 1pm and are reminded that training will go ahead as scheduled on Thursday evening (7pm).

Having secured a healthy mid-table position the Ilkley first team are hoping to show improved form over the remainder of the season and push for a top five position.

Meanwhile, the Ilkley Reserve team is flying high at the top of the West Yorkshire League Alliance Division and will also have a home game on Saturday against title contenders Churwell. Kick-off is once again at 2.15pm at the Ilkley Grammar School field and players should meet at the field at 1pm.

Town's County Cup tie

This weekend Otley Town entertain the West Riding County Amateur Premier Division leaders Bay Athletic in the fourth round of the West Riding County Challenge Cup.

Otley's Harrogate League sides are also involved in cup action with Otley Town A visiting Kirby Malzeard in the second round of the Senior Cup and Otley Town B entertain Knaresborough Celtic in the second round of the Alverton Trophy. Both of these matches kick-off at 1.30pm.

Triangle League

THE Wharfedale Triangle League cup semi-finals will be played on neutral grounds during March.

In the PC Sports Premier Division League Cup Crossflatts will play Park Rangers while Rawdon FC will play Rawdon OB Pirates.

The Crown Yeadon Division One League Cup will see Yeadon Athletic play Commercial and Otley Wharfeside or Shipley and Salts play Horsforth St Margarets. The finals will be at Thackley FC on April 30 and 23 respectively.

Vixens' FA Cup tie at Pool

Table topping Leeds City Vixens are preparing to take on Aston Villa at Pool in Wharfedale this Sunday in the ladies FA cup 4th round at 1pm.

A totally transformed club from 2 years ago has seen the Vixens develop to a top 50 English side, thanks to a new look management team and generous sponsorships from construction firm Mears and Beauty product company Frownies. They topped the Yorkshire & Humberside league last season for promotion to the Northern Combination, where they have maintained an unbeaten run and stand 3 points ahead of the field, poised for another incredible leap into the top 30 next season.

Now they have a chance for glory in the Nations top cup competition! Unbeaten manager Martin Webster is confident his team can push Villa all the way even though the Vixens start underdogs. He is hoping for some strong vocal support to lift his team into the fifth round and into the Vixens record books.

While Adel memorial ground is usually home for the Vixens. A move to Pool has had to be made to accommodate regulations and the ladies club is very grateful to Peter Wilkinson and his team for their enthusiastic welcome.

The match will kick-off 7.30 pm.

Wharfedale will then visit Huddersfield on Saturday, January 21.
