James Dabill warmed up for his assault on the world indoor trial with a winning ride in Ilkley Motor Club's annual New Year competition at Dob Park where 73 riders contested the old established event in the Washburn Valley.
It was a testing time for the 19-year-old, who had Ben Hemingway tracking his every move.
Rob Loney took the Inter award, his first day in the class after rising from novice grade on the last day of last year.
Otley teenager Joe Bradley snapped up the novice award while youth national champion Jack Challoner took the class award on his 15th birthday.
Top clubman grade rider was Neil Gaunt from Dewsbury's Matt Chambers and Harrogate engineer Patrick Darbyshire, who lost the trial when his Montesa stalled on the very first section.
John Chambers made it a family double by winning the youth class on the clubman course to match his father's result.
Northallerton youth Tom Rennison won the Youth Class B award from Jack Spencer and Joshua Maude.
Nick Pullan and Adrian Tate planned the two-lap 20-section course that took in Dob Park and the adjacent Brown's Wood.
