Cab drivers are being advised to steer clear of Bradford's Holme Wood estate because of attacks on them.

The news comes after private hire driver Rashad Khan, 30, became the latest to be stoned by youths as he worked on the estate.

Hackney Carriage bosses today told drivers they continue to work on the estate at their own risk.

CD Khalid, president of the Bradford Hackney Carriage Association, said many of his members had been attacked.

He claimed his appeals to Bradford Council and police had gone unheard.

He said: "The police and the Council can only solve the problems on the estate if they can talk to the people there who are willing to lead them to the offenders.

"I am advising my members to take the risk only if they want to - it is up to them."

The latest attack, last Tuesday night at around 10pm, caused around £900 worth of damage including a smashed rear windscreen, a smashed side window, a damaged wing mirror and dents on the bodywork of the Toyota Avensis.

Mr Khan said: "I am fearful of going up there. I am not sure what I am going to do in the future."

He has been driving for the past two years for Tyersal Radio Cars and his vehicle has been damaged three times.

Now Mr Khan is thinking about starting a petition to get CCTV cameras installed on the estate.

On Tuesday the private hire firm was called to an address off Grayswood Drive where a group of five or six youths started to throw stones as Mr Khan reversed and skidded in the snow.

Mr Khan was unable to give police a description because he rushed to get away. "I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible," he said.

On the same night two other drivers were also pelted with stones on the estate.

"This is a regular occurrence," Mr Khan said. "It happens every other day. Some drivers have even left the firm because of it."

The owner of Tyersal Radio Cars Asar Khan said: "This has been going on for the last two years.

"So many of our cars have been badly damaged and the police are not taking any notice. We are losing business because drivers won't work for us any more."

He believes installing CCTV cameras on the estate would go some way towards solving the problem.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "CCTV is just one of a range of options which can be used to tackle particular problems in an area.

"We are currently reviewing our CCTV policy and a report is being prepared about the use of CCTV in the district."

Councillor Tony Cairns (Lab, Tong), whose ward covers the estate, said: "It's appalling. Stopping it is a police matter.

"Once again it is a small minority spoiling it for the law-abiding majority."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We have received a report of damage to a motor vehicle.

"We are also aware of one other incident in the area and of similar isolated incidents in Wibsey.

"Such incidents are intimidating and for this reason they are taken extremely seriously.

"Inquiries into the identities of those responsible for the damage are under way.

"We would urge anyone with information to contact local police on (01274) 376459 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
