Such memories - good and bad

SIR - Among my Christmas presents I received a copy of the T&A book Bye Bye Broadway. This has filled me with nostalgic memories of my city as well as making me feel I should have never believed all the rubbish spouted about progress and moving with the times.

Bradford had some beautiful stone buildings and now I see that all they needed was sand-blasting, not tearing down to build the concrete monstrosities which replaced them.

How I wish that I had joined all those sensible people who were protesting about Poulson. I did not properly understand what they were all about but by God, they were so right!

Whatever happened to all that stonework? I think Poulson was laughing all the way to the bank. I know he is long dead now and I have a good idea where he ended up, me being a Christian.

Why on earth did the powers-that-be, in Bradford, in those times, see what was happening and condone it?

Yes, I am enjoying your book but it has made me feel that I could have done more to help save our city centre.

If I had joined the protesters, I realise it would not have done any good as everything did get pulled down but I would not feel so inadequate as I am feeling now.

Thank you for the memories, be they good and bad.

Teflon Tony

SIR - We have a pan that we have had for years but the condition of the non-stick coating of Teflon is making it less usable by the day. The time will come shortly for the purchase of a new pan.

Doesn't this remind you of somebody we all know? Yes, it's Teflon Tony who runs the country for his own benefit.

His self-esteem comes before anything else, proved by his actions regarding not having a referendum on leaving the EU and his silly decision to give away thousands of pounds (sterling) to a corrupt non-accountable set of bandits in Brussels. Had he had a referendum when asked for one, we would have been on our way out of it now. If we had left the EU it would have collapsed as France and Germany could not afford to keep the other non-contributory countries going.

Then Teflon Tony states: "We have made friends with some new people by staying in the EU".

Yes, you can buy friendship at the expense of the British taxpayers. Had we left the EU we would have had no financial worries.

Crazy drivers

SIR - The bad weather doesn't put mindless, idiotic drivers off, with their lust for speed.

On Tuesday (December 27) at about 5.15pm I was travelling along Thornton Road to the Four Lane Ends traffic lights, when one of these idiots decided to cut me up to turn right up Cemetery Road. It was my right of way.

Luckily no accident occurred - a pity really, because if one had occurred he/she would have been off the roads for quite some time, not able to have the lust for speed, for taking that chance could possibly cost them their lives, not only theirs but mine and the cars that were behind me, one of them being my husband.

Unfortunately I didn't get the car registration number, if I had they would have had a visit from the police for their actions.

Next time they might not be so lucky.

Justice or revenge?

SIR - Peter Wilson (Letters, December 27) does not like to see the incontrovertible murder statistics in my previous letter. He half-thinks about challenging them, but thinks better of it since he has absolutely no interest in them whatsoever.

He does not see any justice in the death penalty, seeing it as only revenge. In fact "justice" is not in Mr Wilson's dictionary at all. If there were a thousand murders a day, it would make no difference.

Of course, like the miniscule minority of his persuasion, he does not concern himself with having any ideas to combat these alarming figures.

A tangled web!

SIR - Your correspondent Bryan Owram (December 19) is half right. To call someone homosexual is not regarded as defamatory any more in itself, but to call someone a liar still is as it always has been.

So if someone claims not to be homosexual then an allegation that he is could be defamatory as it implies he is a fibber!

In theory this could indeed work the other way round. To say that so-and-so is heterosexual can be defamatory if so-and-so claims the opposite!
