The singer of a rock band who dived from the stage at the end of a gig plunged to his death, an inquest heard.

Patrick Sherry, of North Street, Silsden, died when he hit the dance floor head first after jumping from the stage of Leeds nightclub the Warehouse to grab a lighting beam.

The 29-year-old, who lead singer in Bad Beat Revue, grabbed the gantry and swung his body forward as the final song of the night played. But he lost his grip and plunged to his death on the evening of July 20, Leeds Coroner's Court heard.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was pronounced dead the following day. His head injuries were described by the coroner as "unsurvivable".

In a statement, his wife Charlotte said her husband worked as a shopfitter, but "his real passion was music". She said he was a quiet man, who was very family-oriented and looking forward to the birth of his first child next year. But she said he had a different personality on stage, where he became "explosive and jumped around enthusiastically". The couple married in 2003 after they met when his band played at her school.

She said she heard about the incident in the early hours of July 21. "I was shocked, but it didn't surprise me to hear how the fall had occurred, given his usual behaviour when on stage," she said.

"His loss has devastated his entire family but I accept his death was a tragic accident which happened while he was doing something he loved. I hold no third party responsible for my husband's death."

A post-mortem examination found Mr Sherry died of cerebral lacerations and contusions with skull fracture. A police report revealed that the club's CCTV system showed Mr Sherry jumping from the stage. It said his death appeared to have been a "tragic accident".

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Leeds Coroner David Hinchliff said: "What we can reassure Patrick's family is that there were no suspicious circumstances. It appears when Patrick was on stage he was extremely enthusiastic. He obviously wanted to make something of a finale of the evening and he was quite spontaneous and wanted to jump on to a lighting gantry.

"In the course of doing that he's fallen on to the dance floor below and in the course of doing that sustained fatal head injuries. The sort of spectacular finale was in keeping with Patrick's style as a singer within the group."
