Donovan Ricketts came through unscathed in his first game for two months.
But it needed a late equaliser
by Kevin Sanasy to rescue the Bantams in last night's Pontin's Holiday League Cup clash.
Heavy rain made conditions tricky for goalkeepers and Ricketts was soon into action, diving to his right to deny Marco Adaggio.
Ricketts, who is expected to return to the senior side at Port Vale on Saturday, nearly got caught out by the slippery surface when he lost his footing while
taking a high ball and only just managed to avoid slithering over the line with it.
City included Lewis Emanuel and Danny Cadamarteri, both substitutes against Huddersfield, and Cadamarteri almost broke the deadlock approaching the break with an ambitious effort from outside the box which clipped the Shrewsbury bar.
Damion Stewart was also back, playing alongside Darren Holloway at centre half, and the Jamaican snuffed out Adaggio's close-range effort early in the second half.
But with 20 minutes left, Adaggio turned provider and managed to scramble a pass through the defence to James Robinson on the edge of the area. As Ricketts advanced, the striker calmly chipped him to give Shrewsbury the lead.
City looked to be heading out of the competition but were saved in the final minute when keeper Glyn Thompson spilled the ball under pressure by Sanasy.
