Hundreds of illegal fireworks - including mini-rockets and air bombs - have been seized at a Shipley shop.

And district shopkeepers have been warned there will be further raids before bonfire night.

Police and West Yorkshire Trading Standards officers spent about an hour at PHD Newsagents in Wharncliffe Road yesterday as boxes of banned fireworks were transferred from the shop's store into a waiting vehicle.

Andrew Bibby, principal trading standards officer, said: "The operation in Shipley has taken approximately 500 illegal fireworks off the market this bonfire season.

"The shopkeeper will be warned in this instance, but could face prosecution if there are any future discoveries. The maximum penalty is a £5,000 fine and/or six months in prison."

Mr Bibby said the fireworks fell into the mini-rocket and air bomb categories; both were banned last year as part of a crackdown on "pocket money fireworks".

"They are cheap, noisy and associated with nuisance and anti-social behaviour," he said.

Trading Standards officer Paul Smith said: "We were very surprised by the amount we found - more than 500 illegal fireworks.

"They are not things that have been smuggled into the country. They are fireworks which were once legal and have been banned last year because of their noise or the danger they create."

Sergeant Khalid Khan, of Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "I would like to give a very clear message that police will take strong action against persons selling illegal fireworks or selling to under-age persons.

"I also need to stress the danger of possessing such fireworks. We will continue to make further visits with Trading Standards."

Tests will take place to make sure fireworks are not sold to under-18s.

l Young yobs launched powerful fireworks across a busy city centre street in Bradford.

Two fireworks were aimed at motorists and pedestrians in Hall Ings and a third landed just feet from two construction workers on the Broadway development site.

Police were alerted after the incident occurred at 4pm yesterday and were hunting the culprits, who launched the fireworks from behind a wall at the side of the Bradford Crown Court building.

Nobody is thought to have been injured or any damage caused by the fireworks.

One of the construction workers said an air bomb type firework landed a few feet from where he and a colleague were standing.

He said: "There was a big bang and this powerful firework crashed into the ground just to the left of us. There were sparks everywhere. We were shocked. It was a stupidly dangerous thing to do."

Police confirmed they had received

a call about the incident from a member of the public and they were investigating.
