Not so long ago dancing with a partner was something your grandparents did during the war. It just wasn't cool anymore.

Then came Baz Lurhman's Strictly Ballroom and we went crazy for sequins and salsa.

Now ballroom dancing is cool again. A second series of Strictly Come Dancing is about to thrill the nation on Saturday nights, and this live touring version rolled into Bradford last night.

And what a gem it was. A giant glitter ball sending lights shimmering across the auditorium created the feel of a glamorous ballroom and a fabulous cast of international champion dancers performed moves from across the world, from the cha-cha to the foxtrot, via the quickstep and tango, to a live orchestra and singers.

The show was hosted by Lionel Blair and Jane McDonald, a terrific double act.

Watching Lionel, who's worked with such greats as Sammy Davis Jr, tap dancing and jiving his way across the stage was a joy. He even whisked Elizabeth Taylor around in an elegant waltz - Bradford's own Elizabeth Taylor, picked from the audience.

Jane, looking striking in a series of beautiful gowns, proved a great natural comic as well as a powerful singer and nifty dancer. She had the audience in stitches flirting with 18-year-old dancer Ben Hardwick: "I used to make it a rule never to date a man young enough for me to have given birth to. What a ridiculous rule that was."

Ben and his partner Emma Slater, 16, the show's youngest stars, gave awesome performances. And Strictly Dance Fever runners-up Danny Last and Jodie Binsteed did a terrific fast-paced freestyle routine they choreographed themselves.

A hugely entertaining show that will leave you walking into the night air with more than a spring in your step.
