A Bradford primary school could be closed down as part of a cost-cutting plan to reduce surplus places.

Fagley Primary School, in Falsgrave Avenue, might face the axe because of falling pupil numbers. Every spare school place in the district's school costs Bradford Council £1,300 a year.

Now education bosses have drawn up plans to tackle the situation at three Bradford schools.

The proposals would see Fagley Primary School either close, reduce its annual pupil intake from 30 to 15, merge with another primary school as a federation or stay as it is.

A federation sees two schools remain open, but they would be run by one joint governing body.

No decision on the school's future will be taken until a consultation exercise has taken place.

A report to Bradford Council's Executive says the school is not financially viable because of a shortage of pupils.

One in three places in the school are not being taken up and the situation is expected to get worse.

Councillors will also consider reducing the intake at struggling Wyke Manor School and Haworth Primary School.

Wyke Manor School, which was condemned as failing and placed in special measures by inspectors in July last year, is split across two sites in Wilson Road and Huddersfield Road.

But now the Council is considering reducing its intake from eight classes to six classes which could see the school move onto one site.

While Haworth Primary School is set to be reduced from a one-and-a-half-form entry to a one form entry of 15 pupils.

Bradford Council's executive member for education, Councillor Dale Smith, said: "Surplus places can be very costly and each place can cost us around £1,300.

"This money can be spent more efficiently and effectively on the provision which we need to make."

The council's executive will be asked to approve the start of the consultation process at its meeting at City Hall on Monday, October 17,

Fagley Primary's head teacher Anne Keogan said: "The Council's executive is to be asked to give the go ahead for the consultation on a number of options for the future of the school.

"I cannot pre-empt the outcome of the meeting but I am assured there will be a full consultation before a final decision is made."
