The top ten criminals in the Eccleshill division are now available on the West Yorkshire Police's own intranet.

The pilot scheme being carried out at Eccleshill is the first of its kind in the country. The intranet is available for all police officers in West Yorkshire.

But Eccleshill is leading the way by having their own pages containing specific information about their area.

Officers can call up pages such at the top ten criminals in the division, complete with pictures taken by digital cameras.

They can then "click on" the pictures and get more information about offenders, from their crime patterns to addresses to previous convictions.

Eccleshill Divisional Commander Superintendent David Collins said: "This is a very exciting initiative.

"It cuts down paperwork and means less time in the police station and more time on the beat. That's what people want."

Other pages on Eccleshill's intranet - which cannot be hacked into - include:

Training programmes so officers do not have to spend time travelling to headquarters in Wakefield. They can learn new skills at a time convenient to them

Intelligence reports

Briefings, so police coming onto a shift can catch up with what's being going on in the division

Missing persons, complete with their pictures

A discussion page for officers to pass on their comments

Supt Collins said: "It's a very interactive system developed by the force's IT department.

"We can put individual suspects on the Intranet, even the street where they live. So when officers arrive they are immediately familiar with the situation.

"It improves internal communication and we hope it will be adopted across the divisions soon."
