West Brom are investigating complaints that their fans sang offensive songs about the Valley Parade fire at The Hawthorns last Saturday.

Furious Bradford City fans have roundly condemned their actions and Bantams officials have written to the Midlands club about the incidents.

City managing director Shaun Harvey said: "I have had a letter from a supporter who obviously took objection to the chanting.

"We are very disappointed and we have brought it to the attention of West Brom. They are also dismayed and disappointed by the action of some of their supporters and they are endeavouring to see what they can do about it.

"They are deeply sorry, but every club has a minority of supporters you cannot legislate for."

City Gent editor David Pendleton was at the game.

He was incensed by what he heard.

He said: "A section of West Brom fans found it amusing to chant about the Valley Parade fire.

"This odious situation was exasperated by the inaction of the West Brom stewards.

"They did nothing to stop the chanting until they were confronted by several angry City fans.

"In the 13 years since the fire I can count on one hand the number of times opposition fans have taunted City supporters about the disaster."

Heaton Supporters branch chairman Mark Neale was not at the match, but said: "I am surprised to hear about it. It is disgusting after the amount of time that has passed since the fire.

"There were a couple of incidents involving matches with Stockport and Leeds United, but they were fairly soon after and there has not been anything else like that for years in my experience.

"Obviously it is something to be condemned and I am sure the vast majority of West Brom supporters will condemn it. It sounds like the actions of just a few supporters."

No-one was available for comment at West Brom, but an official confirmed that the letter from City had been received.

Only last month Leeds United fans were condemned by Leicester City supporters after singing songs about the Munich Air Crash on the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.

The club threatened to take action against any supporter identified as taking part.
