A MARCHING band is being sought by organisers of Guiseley's annual carnival.

The band is needed to lead the procession of floats through the town on carnival day, Sunday June 28.

Marian Ealham, chairman of Guiseley Senior Citizens' Association who is organising the carnival said a boy's brigade band had been obtained but when band officials realised the carnival was to be held on a Sunday they had to relinquish the job as they are not allowed to march on Sundays.

Mrs Ealham said Guiseley Brass Band do not march but she was hopeful they would play at the carnival which is to be held for a third year in the grounds of Guiseley Infant School in Oxford Road.

"We have been in touch with an army cadet band but we are still waiting for confirmation," she said.

The procession of floats will leave Station Road and will proceed down Otley Road to Greenbottom, along The Green to Town Gate and then along Oxford Road to the infant school.

"Last year we had 15 floats in the procession but we are hoping to have even more this time," said Mrs Ealham.

Norman Hunter, the former Leeds United and England half-back is to open the carnival.

A carnival queen has not yet been chosen. Members of Aireborough Round Table are to help with the stalls. There is to be a fairground and children are to provide the entertainment.

Anyone wishing to book a stall should ring Mrs Ealham on 0113 2509932 and those intending to enter a float should contact Joan Belsham, chairman of the carnival committee, on 0113 2506182.

Proceeds are for the Guiseley Senior Citizens' annual trip to the coast which this year is to Morecambe on August 9.
