A 19-YEAR-OLD man killed when he crashed into a lorry died accidentally an inquest ruled this week.
Coroner Jeremy Cave said Steven Michael Horsley crashed his Skoda car on Tuesday November 11 when he was travelling towards Skipton at 8am along the A65 at Coniston Cold.
Mr Horsley, of Thornview Road, Hellifield, a mechanic, died in Leeds General Infirmary on November 17 from multiple injuries.
He took a "gentle" left hand bend, hit a dry stone wall, "ricocheted" off it and collided with the front of a Volvo lorry being driven by Michael Crossley, who was travelling in the opposite direction. Mr Crossley was uninjured in the accident.
Witness Andrew Henry, who was driving the car in front of the lorry, said the Skoda had got round the bend, but then in his opinion, Mr Horsley had over corrected the car and that was why he swerved and crashed.
Another witness, Christopher Sharp, travelling behind, said Mr Horsley was travelling at about 55mph.
PC Foulston added it had been difficult to examine the Skoda after the crash because it had been so severely damaged, but it was obvious Mr Horsley had not been wearing a seatbelt.
Mr Cave said: "Steven Horsley was not going at a ridiculously fast speed but he may have been going too quickly for that bend."
