Dudley Hill's Richard Bingley has won a late call-up for the Bradford ARL side to meet Oldham ARL in the final of the Inter-Town Shield trophy at Saddleworth tonight (7.30pm).

Great Britain centre Paul Cornforth misses the match due to a hand injury, giving Bingley his chance.

Also in the Bradford squad are fellow GB tourists Chris Parr and Paul Cornforth, while the Oldham team should include internationals Paul Brassington, Jason Wilkes and Emerson Jackman, who will be on their way to Australia this summer.

West Bowling player-coach Glenn Barraclough proved his steely nerve when he set up two late tries to steer his side to a magnificent 29-20 fifth round National Cup success at Leigh Miners Rangers.

Bowling were cast as the underdogs against a much fancied Rangers outfit that has not lost a match at home this season and are currently fourth in the National Conference Premier Division.

They got off to the worst possible start when after only four minutes a fumbled pass gifted the Miners an easy try, but Peter Simpson steadied the ship with a penalty.

The early loss of loose forward Nigel Halmshaw with concussion led to a pack re-shuffle, but after 37 minutes Barraclough spotted a shaft of light near the Miners' line to power over from ten metres out. Simpson added the extras to give Bowling the lead 8-4.

With the home line under siege another score looked a certainty until one pass too many gave Miners' centre John Maxwell an easy interception which he gratefully accepted to race the length of the field for a converted try and an undeserved 10-8 half-time lead.

Leigh posted a further converted Maxwell try on the re-start and when they added a penalty things looked bleak for Bowling. It would have been easy at this point to throw in the towel, but Bowling are made of sterner stuff and took the game to the Miners with gusto. Substitute second row forward John Heliwell sent Simon Owen over at the corner to peg back the score to 18-12, but another penalty gave the home side a further advantage.

With 15 minutes to go Bowling turned the screw when centre Martin Tordoff used his pace and power to beat three men in a race to the corner, and Barraclough made them pay further when he sold a perfect dummy to send Terry Poole scampering over near the posts. Simpson added the goal and a drop goal to give Bowling a 23-20 lead.

It was left to Barraclough to crown his superb display by sprinting from a play the ball to serve the supporting Johnny Smith with an inside pass for the final six pointer and a memorable victory.

West Bowling A beat Silsden Park Rangers at home 32-16 to gain promotion for the second successive year, but they failed to take the Division Four title on points difference.

Silsden put up a good first half show and were only trailing 16-14 at half-time. In the second half Bowling lost forward Andy Wilcock, sent off for punching, but produced the better rugby to take the spoils.

Tries went to Chris Scott (2), Adie Priestly and Steve Carter with Jason Woolham kicking six goals to add to his touchdown.

Shipley looked to have done enough to cause an upset when they led champions Keighley Albion A 16-4 in the Division Five play-offs, with tries from Matthew Fitch, Craig Scott and Mick Carnelly.

The Albion hit back in the second half, but Shipley were still in with a shout following a Sam Bentley try which gave them a 22-18 advantage. Keighley pulled away again, however, and a late drop goal settled matters at 23-22.
