Bingley Harrier Andy Peace will lead the local challenge at the Bolling 5km road race at Bowling Park, West Bowling on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Haworth-based international, who helped his club to victory at the prestigious English National Cross-Country Championships in Leeds a fortnight ago, will be using the event as a fast work-out as he prepares for the forthcoming spring racing programme - both on the roads and the fells.

Peace, who is also known as an accomplished racing cyclist, is also training for international selection at duathlon (run, bike, run) where he will be aiming for European and world level competition, later in the year.

The Bolling 5km race is being organised by Bingley Harriers, in conjunction with race sponsors Bradford Council's Recreation Division, and will be held on a traffic-free tarmac course within the grounds of the park, near to Bolling Hall.

There will also be a series of one-mile races for athletes aged under 17 with medals to all finishers courtesy of fast food giants McDonalds, the first race starting at 2pm.

Entries for the 5km will be taken on the day at Bowling Community College next to the park, where showers, changing facilities and refreshments are available.

A team of veteran runners from Bingley Harriers will challenge the nations best as the BVA British Veterans Cross-Country Championships in Croydon, Surrey on Saturday.

Thackley's Les Haynes, who has won three national championship medals in the past three weeks, will lead fellow over-50s runners Mike Smith and Neil Robson - both former county veterans cross-country champions - at the south London venue, together with former over-45s Yorkshire champion Peter Probin, Bob Dover and Fred Gibbs.

Burley-in-Wharfedale's Tony Gill travels to London this weekend to represent Yorkshire in the inter-counties 20-mile road racing championships.

Gill will be joined in the Finchley 20 event by Holmfirth Harriers' county 15-mile champion Dave Watson, John Convery (Leeds City) and Dave Bond (Askern AC).

Spenborough's Denise Dean has gained her Yorkshire vest after an impressive winter season, and will contest the women's inter-counties event. Runners in the third race in the McDonald's multi-terrain championship series found Greenhead track at Keighley a totally different proposition to running on the grass or road.
