Braithwaite People's Asso-ciation (BPA) has taken over the running of the estate's Keith Thompson Centre. The Children's Society, based in the building for several years, moved out last Thursday.
The BPA is renting the building from the Society and sub-letting it to established users such as a mother and toddler group and the Humpty Dumpty Playgroup. Action Beats Crime moved its discos and children's activities from Keith Thom-pson to the nearby Whinfield Centre the previous week.
The BPA plans to develop other activities in the Keith Thompson Centre and will ask residents, particularly pensioners, what they want.
Action Beats Crime (ABC) has changed only the venue for its regular Saturday, Sunday and Monday sessions. Thursday discos have been moved to Wednesday. Chair-man Steven Spencer says he hopes all current members will continue to support ABC.
He says: "There will be no change to ABC's staff - we remain in full control with no interference from anyone else.
"It is with regret that we leave the Keith Thompson Centre but the building is no longer suitable for our future plans.
"We would like to thank everyone at Whinfield, especially Lesley Wright, for their help, support and encouragement."
Deirdre Quill, the Children's Society's regional manager, says the BPA will run the building initially for 12 months.
She says: "We are pleased that through the BPA our building will continue to provide much-needed services to the local community."
