A school and a community centre have unveiled plans to improve social and sporting activities for Wyke residents.

The project, estimated to cost £1.7 million, is being spearheaded by John Fryett, the headteacher of Wyke Manor School, and Pat Sherry, the manager of Wyke Community Centre.

Architects have created an initial design to transform the community centre. It includes disabled access throughout the building, a stage for theatre groups, extensive changing rooms, badminton courts and gym facilities. If the plan gets the go ahead the community centre, in Wilsden Road, will become a sporting and social haven with a host of events for the young and old.

The initiative - dubbed Wyke 2000 - aims to put the school and the community at the heart of the village

Mr Sherry said the centre and school, which have close links, had held extensive talks.

He said: "This is so important to the area as we have very little in terms of facilities. It is a very exciting time for the community."

Mr Fryett said the project would be a boost for everyone.

"The nearest major sporting facility is at Odsal and it is a bit of a journey, so we want to improve the situation for residents over here by enhancing the facilities for everyone," he said.

Mr Fryett stressed the need for residents, groups and businesses to get involved and voice their opinions on the scheme.

"At the moment all we have are our plans, but we have got support from some groups including business A H Marks and Wyke Wanderers Football club.

"But what we need to know from residents is this really what they want," he said.

Details of Wyke 2000 will be discussed at the Neighbourhood Forum Meeting at Wyke Library, Huddersfield Road on Thursday at 7.30pm.
