Out of town shopping malls can have a devastating effect on traditional town and city centres. You don't have to look miles away from Keighley to see the full impact of that claim.

But the news of how well the new retail development at Hard Ings is going, and the clout of the household names who are scheduled to move in, is more than welcome.

As well as attracting more money into the town, the other major benefit is the number of jobs the development will create. We should not forget the creation of a new children's play area off Trinity Street.

It is another major contribution to the future well being of Keighley, which must be one of a very small number of towns left in the land with so many shopping facilities of all kinds within reasonable walking distance.

Add to all that exciting plans for the Keighley Art Factory which would provide a focal point for the wealth of creative talent in this area.

It is to be most sincerely hoped that the public at large take note of the calls to make this dream come true. The consultation exercise being carried out is to be applauded. The gallery will add a much needed dimension to the cultural and entertainment needs of Keighley - not just for locals but visitors alike.

The third good news announcement is the additional funding for Keighley's Christmas lights. It is another step towards making Keighley a hassle-free one-stop shop for shopping needs in the build up to the festive season.

Anyone who is in a position of influence, or residents visiting other parts, should have no hesitation is proclaiming what a great place Keighley is to visit for all kinds of shopping and entertainment.
