TWO energetic South Craveners are setting off on different charity challenges later this year, hoping to raise thousands of pounds for worthy causes.

Deborah Hambley, 26, of Steeton, heads off to Turkey for the 400km Cappadocia Cycling Challenge, which is set to raise more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

And Richard Boyes, of Bradley, will be in one of 50 teams hoping to scale the four highest mountains in Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland within 48 hours to help teenagers suffering from cancer.

Deborah aims to raise at least £1,800 herself and will be joined by 60 other cyclists for the ride, which will take her through some of Turkey's most spectacular scenery.

During the nine days in the saddle, riders will be tackling both on and off road sections, crossing a high plateau, hills and mountains.

In preparation for the sponsored ride Deborah is clocking up 100 miles a week, but she is having to prepare on a racing cycle after a mountain bike she was using was stolen.

"The route combines on-road cycling with stretches of dirt track and thick forest over incredibly varied terrain, so I certainly don't expect an easy ride," she said.

"But I'm really looking forward to the challenge and of course it's all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief which is a huge incentive to give it my best shot.

"The money I raise will enable Macmillan to continue their work with the NHS and others to provide the best care possible for people living with cancer and their families."

The ride, which begins on October 10, will take the cyclists through the surreal volcanic landscape of Goreme Valley, to the wind uplands of Central Anatolia and across the Taurus mountains before descending to the Mediterranean coast at Adana.

Richard will be taking part in a 14,000-feet climb and 1,900-mile drive, non-stop in 48 hours.

The NatWest worker is part of the team attempting Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike, Snowdon and Ireland's Carantouhill.

Although Richard is acting as the driver, he has to be fully fit in case another member of the team drops out.

The group is committed to raising £3,000 from sponsorship for the renowned Stoke Manderville Hospital.

"The fundraising efforts will help ease the suffering of young people with cancer, encourage them to fight the life-threatening disease and proceed to a full and healthy adulthood," said Richard.

Their challenge will take place on July 2 and a similar event last year raised more than £426,000.

The team also includes Bob Andrews from nearby Burley-in-Wharfedale. Anyone who would like to sponsor the men can contact Bob on 01274 763000.
