New residents of Oxenhope are being asked to help organise the village's popular Straw Race. Jeff Moore, chairman of the organising committee, says volunteers are needed to play an active part in planning and running the event.
The run, now in its 23rd year, raises around £12,000 a year for local charities and attracts thousands of spectators. Teams of two run from pub to pub in Oxenhope and the surrounding area carrying a bale of straw.
This year's race will be on July 5 and is expected to attract about 500 runners. Entrants are encouraged to wear fancy dress on a Mardi Gras theme to help create a carnival atmosphere. Runners can park in designated car parks and catch free buses to the start, or travel on free trains on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.
Mr Moore says the past three or four years have seen entries rising towards their previous high of 400 teams. "Entries are coming in slowly at the moment but we're hoping to get a few more than last year," he adds.
Anyone willing to join the committee should phone Mr Moore on 272826.
Also applications are available from the Waggon and Horses, Bay Horse, Oxenhope Social Club, Lamb Inn and the Dog and Gun (or phone 644298).
