Cricket: Matthew Hoggard and Paul Hutchison each claimed an early wicket but Hoggard also soaked up some punishment after Yorkshire had put Durham in to bat in the championship match at Riverside today.
With England not releasing Chris Silverwood from the Lord's Test, Yorkshire had to pull Ryan Sidebottom out of the second team match against Durham Seconds at Middlesbrough to take his place.
That four-day game was due to start yesterday but bad weather ruled out the chance out any play.
Yorkshire were without their three leading pace bowlers in Darren Gough, Craig White and Silverwood but they were heartened by the return of Australian Darren Lehmann who has now recovered from the after effects of his back injection.
Although Yorkshire have won five of their six previous championship encounters against Durham, with the other game being draw, they were expecting a much tougher confrontation in the present match, their opponents having risen to second place in the table.
A soaking wet outfield delayed the start for 15 minutes but Jon Lewis was quickly into his stride, steering Hoggard for four in the first over and glancing and cutting him for further boundaries.
Michael Gough had still failed to score, however, when he pushed Hoggard firmly off bat and pad to forward short leg where Matthew Wood held an excellent two-handed catch and Durham were 13 for one.
Joined by Nick Speak, Lewis continued to bat positively and took a further couple of boundaries of Hoggard before he attempted to drive across the line at an overpitched ball from Hutchison and fell lbw for 22 out of 35 for two.
Durham's Australian captain David Boon had some repair work to do with Speak and although Hutchison remained a threat he received a warning from umpire Geoff Burgess for running on the pitch.
Speak straight drove Hoggard for four over the wet outfield to raise the 50 in only 11 overs and at 62 for two, Hoggard gave way to Gavin Hamilton after his wicket had cost him 47 runs from seven overs.
Meanwhile at Canterbury former England star Martin McCague claimed the early wicket of Mat Dowman, giving Kent an early boost against Nottingham-shire.
Dowman was bowled with the total on 24 after hitting 12 runs, with Notts moving to 53 for one after 24 overs.
