A FATHER and son seriously hurt in a bizarre road crash may have been accidentally injured by a friend of the family, it has emerged.

The twist of fate was revealed as the men recovered in hospital following Monday morning's accident near Leeds-Bradford Airport at Yeadon.

The 50-year-old Cleckheaton man and his 30-year-son had been driving in convoy out of Bradford and stopped their Rover Metro and Peugeot 405 cars at the side of the A658, close to the airport's industrial estate, to discuss something and were standing between the two vehicles when the accident happened at about 7.40am. A third car - a Ford Sierra - collided with the back of the parked Peugeot, shunting it forward and pinning the father and son between their vehicles.

A police spokesman said: "The officer dealing with the case has said he believes that the other driver is a friend of the family and knows them both. It's quite bizarre and just one of those freak accidents."

Both men suffered serious leg injuries and had to be sedated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Following the accident - which also left the Ford Sierra driver, who comes from Eccleshill, suffering from shock and minor injuries - all three men were taken to Leeds General Infirmary. None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening. The 50-year-old is said to be in a stable condition. His son, who lives in Huddersfield, underwent surgery on his two broken legs at the hospital on Monday afternoon.
