Former Great Britain half-back Shaun Edwards has admitted that his style of play did not suit Bradford Bulls.
The 31-year-old yesterday ended a largely unhappy eight-month stay at Odsal by mutual agreement as coach Matthew Elliott acted to halt a disastrous run of three successive defeats.
And now Salford and prospective Super League new boys Gateshead are believed to be the front-runners for his services..
Edwards moved to Odsal last winter from London Broncos with the Bulls hoping he could help them build on last season's Super League title triumph
But his arrival appeared to upset the balance of the side and after discussing the situation with Elliott, Edwards is today looking for a new club.
The game's most decorated player said: "We decided it would be best for both of us if I left. I don't think it suited my style of play and for the last couple of weeks I haven't been enjoying my rugby.
"I just couldn't do the things at Bradford that I did all my career at Wigan. I was probably used to being in more control.
"There are no hard feelings with Matthew Elliott. He is a good bloke. Hopefully, there will be no hard feelings. They are a good set of lads and I've made some good friends. The club have been good to me, they've looked after me."
Elliott said: "Shaun and I have sat down and we recognise that both parties have tried to make this work but it is just not clicking.
"It isn't through a lack of effort on both sides but there has obviously been some difficulty with continuity. We have got to the stage where a decision had to be made.
"The question was do we change everything or change one thing? To Shaun's credit he recognised that it just was not working either."
Edwards' spell at Odsal has been dogged by rumours of off-the-field problems with skipper Graeme Bradley even being moved to issue a denial of a rift between himself and Edwards in his Yorkshire Sports column.
However Elliott was keen to stress today: "It has not been driven by any sections of the club."
Edwards should not be out of the game long. "I'll listen to any offers that may come along," said the playmaker, who is currently sidelined with a persistent sternum injury.
"Hopefully, Bradford will ask the £40,000 they paid for me. I would be disappointed if they try and get more."
Salford Reds have emerged as one of the interested clubs with coach Andy Gregory saying: "I played alongside Shaun for five years at Wigan and he is still a class act. I would definitely be keen on trying to get him to Salford if a deal can be arranged."
Meanwhile, the Bulls have been boosted by the news that an X-ray on Aussie prop Jeremy Donougher has revealed no damage to his elbow.
And winger Abi Ekoku, who was placed on report after a scuffle with Salford skipper David Hulme during Sunday's 11-10 defeat at Salford, has been told by the disciplinary committee that no action will be taken.
