Yorkshire's young fast bowlers were much too hot for Devon to handle at Exmouth yesterday where the Minor Counties' side were sent packing for just 80 in 28.3 overs and Yorkshire charged through to the second round of the NatWest Trophy by nine wickets.
They will now be away to the winners of the Lancashire v Sussex match which is due to resume at Old Trafford today.
Heavy morning rain cleared in time for a start to be made after an early lunch and rampant Yorkshire were all done and dusted before tea, the match lasting for only 210 minutes.
With Devon just as eager as Yorkshire to get the game over in the day, Peter Roebuck was happy to let his side bat first when he won the toss, but he would still have liked a much better effort from his team.
Only Roebuck himself and another former Somerset batsman, Nick Folland, managed to get into double figures as Yorkshire bowled with great venom on a lively pitch.
Man-of-the-match Paul Hutchison, Ryan Sidebottom and Gavin Hamilton each picked up three wickets on their NatWest debuts with Chris Silverwood, the only capped member of the quartet, getting into the act late on by dismissing Roebuck, who was last out for 22.
Yorkshire preferred batsman Matthew Wood to left-arm spinner Richard Stemp which meant that Michael Vaughan and Darren Lehmann would have had to share some overs if the innings had run its course, but in the event the two part-time slow bowlers were not required.
Hutchison, who bowled 12 overs straight off soon had Sheffield Collegiate batsman Nick Gaywood edging to Richard Blakey before having the other opener, Gareth Townsend, superbly caught low to his right at first slip by Anthony McGrath.
Kevin Barrett was caught behind off Hamilton's first ball, Hutchison struck again by trapping Andy Pugh lbw and half the Devon side had gone when Folland was dismissed by Hamilton.
Byas stretched high to catch Andy Hele off Hamilton and then Sidebottom made his presence felt with three wickets in five balls, knocking back Andy Cottam's off-stump in between having Keith Donohue and Stuart MacGill caught behind.
Byas and Vaughan made a brisk start for Yorkshire with 22 in six overs, but when Aussie leg-spinner MacGill came on he dismissed Byas lbw with his third ball. But that was to be the only setback.
Darren Gough is making good progress with his hand injury and hopes to be able to tell the England selectors he is fit for the third Test against South Africa which begins at Old Trafford next Thursday.
Gough had a further X-ray yesterday on the finger he broke while batting in the first Test at Edgbaston and this showed the wound to be healing well.
He was having nets today and if he comes through without any reaction will play for Yorkshire in their three-day match against Cambridge University, starting at Headingley on Saturday.
